Hi, I’m Rachael Spaulding — owner and operator of The Bakewell.
I hold a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Cincinnati and have spent the past decade working in care management and discharge planning amongst two local hospitals. Our healthcare system was deeply impacted by the challenges brought on by the 2020 pandemic- the added stress and overall healthcare fatigue led me to reflect on my own path, and ultimately pushed me to seek a new direction—one that aligned more closely with my passions and long-term dreams.
The Bakewell has been a vision in my heart for years. In December 2024, we hosted a small family Christmas gathering in the space—well before any renovations had begun. At the end of the evening as my husband and I showed a few of our family members around my aunt said, “You have a hidden gem here.” I think she was right.. and it reignited something in me.
Since that moment, I made the difficult but fulfilling decision to step back from full-time hospital work. I now work on an as-needed basis at the hospital and have devoted the remainder of my time to renovating and bringing new life to the apartment units at The Bakewell building and the event space you see today. This launch into entrepreneurship has been full of challenges, learning opportunities, and excitement. I have spent countless hours turning the a vision into reality. Most of all this new journey is filled with hope.
My greatest inspiration has always been my family—especially my children, Jude and Josie. The Bakewell is more than a business; it’s a dream realized. I hope it shows my kids that it’s never too late to change your path and chase what brings you joy.
Located at 402 Bakewell Street, the building dates back to 1907. Over the years, it has been home to many things—most widely known as Joy’s Corner Pub or Monkey Brew Coffee. It was important to me to honor the building’s history while updating it with care. Throughout the building, you’ll find original features such as exposed brick, fireplaces, tiling, and hardwood floors—elements that tell a story and give the space added warmth and character.
My hope for The Bakewell is that it becomes a space that feels welcoming, beautiful, and full of life. Whether it’s a baby shower, a photography session, a family gathering, a retirement party, or even just a quiet meeting—my goal is to create an environment where meaningful moments happen.
Thank you for being here. I hope you love the space as much as I do!
